What is Credit Counseling?
Honest credit counseling agencies are great
resources for those who are looking for debt management help.
Watch out for those that are merely looking to sell you their
product. The best way to know you are working with an
honest company is to do the research.
These days, the term "credit counseling" is
often referring to a debt management plan or DMP. If you
are having trouble with debt, a DMP may be able to help you by lowering interest rates, eliminating
fees, and consolidating your debt into one low monthly payment.
If you would like more information or think you could benefit
from a DMP, give one of our accredited credit counselors a call
at 866-406-4132.
Currently, there are many agencies who
claim to offer credit counseling, but are simply hoping to
enroll as many people into a DMP as possible. An honest
debt management credit counseling agency should offer much more
than just a DMP. An actual counseling session should
occur, and an accredited counselor should clearly explain all of
your options to you. Your credit counselor should go over
your budget with you as well as answer any questions you may
have. A debt management plan is not the best option for everyone, and you
should know what you are getting into if you enroll in one.

Beware of Dishonest
Organizations
Some debt management credit counseling agencies
are in business for their own interests not the interests of
their clients. Unfortunately, many such organizations claim to offer
help in the form of credit counseling, but are actually putting
consumers in an even worse situation.
There are many things to look out for in a
credit counseling organization. Many agencies charge
extremely high setup and monthly fees putting you further in
debt. Some even keep your
first entire monthly payment as a fee, lining their pockets but
not helping you out of debt.
Avoid Dishonest Agencies
Working with one of these shady agencies could
cause you to fall further behind on your payments. Then
you will be in even more debt than before. Some of these
agencies
are not upfront about the fees they charge, so look out. You may not even
realize how much of your money they plan to take.
Avoid being ripped off by carefully researching
any company with which you plan on doing business. Check
out their report with the Better Business Bureau to see if they
have had any complaints against them. If you have any
friends or family members who have talked to a credit counselor,
you can also ask them if they would recommend their counselor or
not.
Be sure to get agreements and fees
in writing. Read thoroughly the material they provide
about their services and make sure to ask lots of questions.
Fully understand the DMP or other resource they are providing
you before you sign up.
